SUBTITLE: Market share for hybrids expected to increase half a percentage point a year.

BASIC INFO:

DETROIT According to automotive research firm Edmunds.com, sales of gas-electric hybrids are expected to increase next year and outpace the U.S. auto markets growth, The Detroit News reports.

Edmunds.com predicted that U.S. auto sales would rise to 11.5 million cars and light trucks next year, up from an estimated 10.3 million this year. However, it expects hybrids to outperform those figures, despite costing more than comparable gas-powered models.

According to Edmunds, shares of hybrids are expected to reach 3.2 percent of the market in 2010, up from around 2.8 percent this year. It expects market share for hybrids to increase half a percentage point a year for the foreseeable future, according to The Detroit News.

Diesel-powered light vehicles are expected to drop to 2.1 percent next year, down from 2.2 percent this year, a reflection of more stringent emission rules.

While pure electric vehicles will reach the market next year, they will account for less than one percent of total sales, and it will take some time before significant market share builds for the segment," said Zhenwei Zhou, Edmunds' senior statistician.
