At first people snickered at these cars, and we heard many stories of NEV drivers being harased and even run off the road by large SUV's who apparently felt these cars didn't deserve space in the lanes.
This shows you how messed up our culture is. Gas guzzling trucks and "Sport utility vehicles" dominated car sales... This drove gas prices even higher with their inefficient use of fuel and clogged highways and limited parking spaces with their size. People used their Gas Hog Vehicles "GHV's" as social statements of their wealth and power.
The first models introduced met opposition from safety boards and federal laws. They were deemed "unsafe to drive" and were subject to "unreasonable" legal restrictions.
But, as people changed their attitudes, and basically were "sick and tired of paying high gas prices" they began to challenge their local DMV's. Instead of making it mandatory for NEV's to be built of steel to withstand crashing into vehicles going 50+ miles per hour people demanded certain laws and streets to limit all cars from going unsafe speeds.
