The Smart Car was one of the first mass produced Neighborhood / Medium Speed Vehicles introduced at at time when the public was still very blind in respect to the effects of the worldwide oil addiction. These cars popularized the ElectricCars.com "Green Street" movement and became very popular with people who wanted to reduce not only thier fuel consumption but also enjoyed the ease of driving a practical "city car".

The Smart Car encountered several daunting obstacles including the worst economy in 80 years (caused by gas prices) But, also legal issues. The Smart was stifled by DMV laws which did not allow it on hiways in the USA. Although, the nearly identical gas version was allowed to blast down the freeways at 80 MPH? The gas version established the size, but the Smart electric car revolutionized the world !
